Although Halloween originally started being celebrated as an evil night, when spirits would roam the earth causing havoc among the towns people, the Roman Catholic church created "All Saints Day" to try and counteract it. This day was to honor saints and pray for the souls of the dead. Even though the church tried to downplay Halloween it has continued on and become a big market for retailers. Halloween is second only to Christmas in merchandise sales.
Halloween today is just one more day we can dress up, have parties, and take the kids out for free candy. Some people really get into the season by growing pumpkins. Some of them weigh over 1000 pounds.
Funny Halloween Costumes
Pumpkin carving and pumpkin painting is getting more and more adults involved in the holiday every year. Halloween parties are everywhere during this season. Trick or treating started when the Irish began preparation for All Hallow's Eve. The people would ask neighbors for contributions of food for the town feast.
Each year parents take their children trick or treating and dress them up in costume. Some towns and businesses even have a costume contest. Statistics show that Halloween candy sales are approximately billion annually. And that is just in the United States. Thirty five millions pounds of that is candy corn! An even stranger fact is that over 10% of pet owners dress their pets up in costume!
No matter what you, your children, or your pet do for Halloween, be careful and remember never go trick or treating alone.
